Join our West African Drum, Dance and Cultural Study Tour: Ghana 2018
A drum and dance journey that will change your life! Immerse yourself in the rich and vibrant culture of Ghana, West Africa, in our 3-week drum, dance, and cultural study tour! Led by renowned percussionist and educator, Emmanuel Nii Bortey, and master dancer, drummer, and choreographer Fredrick Kpakpo Addo, the Soul Rhythm Study Tour is an inspiring educational program focused on West African drumming, dance, and music. Through this cultural immersion course, you will be introduced to a wide range of topics related to African culture, music, philosophy, and community. The program, centered in Nungua, a village on the outskirts of Ghana's capital, is open to all who wish to join, one to two-week options being available if unable to commit to the full three-week course.
Tour participants will study traditional African drumming, dance, rhythms, language, and culture 5 hours daily, all while enjoying the beautiful Ghanaian coastline; it is the perfect way to gain valuable personal, academic, and professional skills abroad. Dances and drumming taught range from traditional rhythms specific to many Ghanaian ethnic groups, and rhythms of neighboring countries in West Africa, played on both djembe, dundun and kpalogo drums. Participants will require one djembe and one kpalogo drum for classes; drums are available for rent or purchase. We offer special tour drum rates of $80 USD for rent or $130.00 USD for purchase with drum bags included.
If you are looking for an opportunity to immerse yourself in the heart of traditional African music, dance, and drumming, while experiencing local culture, look no further! As a way to give back to the community who shares so much of their music and culture of which you become part of, we provide leisure time to allow participants to volunteer at one of our meaningful community outreach programs, whether it be working with orphanage children or teaching at a local school. In the evenings, you can enjoy live performances at various locations in Nungua, alongside your teachers and fellow participants, as well as by local community members.
Your African experience is not complete until you have explored the fascinating attractions Ghana has to offer. On weekends, you will be able to visit the nearby beaches, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the Accra Art Center, Wli Waterfalls, Cape Coast Castle – infamous for its use in the slave trade, Kakum National Park, and many other breath-taking sights, all of which are included in your tour package. Ghana is a country renowned for its dynamic cultural expressions, its friendly people, and its outstanding artistic heritage which manifests itself in all aspects of local performance and craft. Tour participants are granted first-hand opportunity to explore this rich heritage through deep and meaningful engagement with traditional culture and art, all while taking in the outstanding scenery and peaceful way of life Ghana has to offer.
